Body Composition & Distribution

Total body composition analysis using the BOD POD®; circumference measurements of body fat distribution; blood pressure and counseling.  Body composition testing is based on the same theoretical variable computational calculations as underwater testing except there is no water.  Measurements are based on changes in air pressure (i.e. plethysmography).  Testing using the BOD POD® has been reported to be the most accurate and convenient indirect method of body composition analysis.  (Am J Clin Nutr 1998; 68:786-93)

Resting Metabolism

Measurement of oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production is used to calculate energy production and energy utilization from carbohydrate and fat for weight management.  Information is used to determine personal energy needs for maintaining or changing weight status.  Testing information also indicates an individual’s predisposition for using body fat versus carbohydrate for energy.

Dietary Analysis and Counseling

Upon completion and return of a 3-day dietary record and health questionnaire, the information will be analyzed using Food Processor® software and assessed for its balance in nutritional value and total calories.  An explanation of dietary intake and pattern is given in relation to healthy lifestyle processes and weight control.

Insulin Resistance Screening

Insulin Resistance Syndrome (IRS) is a metabolic condition that develops gradually with weight gain.  It is estimated that at least 25% of the healthy adult population has IRS.  IRS is now recognized to be a causal factor in the development of several health complications including coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and certain types of cancer, including breast and colon.  The screening method employed is based on that outlined by the Third National Cholesterol Education Program (JAMA 2001; 285:2486-2505).

Allergy Screening

Testing involves measuring blood levels of antibodies against the most common allergy-causing agents: grass pollen, rye pollen, birch pollen, dust, cat and dog dander, and mold.

Pulmonary Function

Breathing function of the lungs will be measured by a forced expiratory maneuver, using a spirometer.  The test is a screening method for asthma and other health complications (Eur Respir J 1998; 12:641-645).

Fitness Evaluation and Prescription

Testing for cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and back assessment are available in the Exercise Physiology Laboratory, Department of Kinesiology, New Hampshire Hall (tjq@unh.edu).
